About Hull School of Art and Design (HSAD)

The Hull School of Art and Design, founded in 1861, is regarded nationally and internationally for its excellence as a specialist creative centre for higher education. During the past eighteen months all existing higher education programmes have been re written to maintain curriculum and vocational currency. Over the past year new and sometimes unique programmes have been added to our portfolio to give students a fully comprehensive and contemporary range of subjects to choose from. Teaching staff are passionate and committed to their subjects, often with experience of both industry and higher education contexts. Staff are engaged in their own research or professional practice, exhibiting in this country and internationally, working for prestigious clients, running and contributing to conferences and publishing their work.

We offer a friendly and creative environment in which to study. Students enjoy working in small teaching groups and have easy access to a full range of facilities. The School is based in specialist iconic 1970s buildings located right in the centre of the city and overlooking the Queens Gardens park. Over the past three years significant investment has gone into new facilities and improvements to the estate to ensure that students have access to a high quality environment. All students are provided with base studios from which to operate during their time at HSAD.

Our higher education programmes are supported by multi media, graphic design, television design, web design and digital suites, plus purpose built specialist workshops dedicated to 3D and architectural design, jewellery, and ceramics. Specialist art and design studios also include a industry standard photographic studios, digital print and editing suites, fine art/illustration studios and print rooms, textile studios with the latest in production equipment including computer linked dobby looms, and extensive fashion and costume studios/workshops.

The School has entered an exciting new stage in its long and illustrious history, having recently established new overseas links which offer students the chance to take art in exchanges with for example Chinese universities.

Hull School of Art and Design places great importance on external links which benefit students. Our track record in winning nationally important competitions, live project work, commissioned work and opportunities for students to exhibit in professional venues is second to none. Student progression into work and post graduate study is testament to the relevant vocational enhancements that students enjoy whilst studying at HSAD. Exposure to a vibrant, regular and diverse visiting lecturer programme ensures that students are able to experience the work of eminent practitioners during their time with us.
